Oncology Rehabilitation

Approximately one million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and currently there are more than eight million Americans who have a history of cancer. Therefore, there is a large percentage of the community who are suffering from the side effects of cancer and its treatment. Physical Therapy can be instrumental in assisting a patient in the return to their prior level of function.

The following are the benefits of physical therapy associated with oncology rehabilitation:
During or after cancer treatment:
• Decreased pain
• Decreased edema
• Decreased risk of lymphedema, chronic pain, and Axillary Web Syndrome
• Improved activities of daily living
• Improved range of motion, strength and endurance
• Improved tissue mobility

Following Cancer Surgery including Lumpectomy or Mastectomy:
• Decrease risk of scar and soft tissue adhesions
• Improve range of motion and strength for return to activities of daily living
• Education on lymphedema prevention

During chemotherapy:
• Energy conservation techniques
• Gentle exercises to help reduce fatigue and joint pain

During Radiation:
• Decrease skin adhesion and cording
• Improve shoulder motion needed for radiation treatments

After Reconstruction:
• Decrease implant migration
• Decrease scar adhesions
• Decrease edema
