Lymphedema

Lymphedema refers to swelling in an area of the body due to accumulation of interstitial fluid trapped in the tissue spaces. As the lymph fluid continues to build up, the venous and lymphatic vessels and nodes become obstructed leading to chronic edema. The swelling can lead to restricted range of motion, heaviness in the limbs, and infection. Angela Wicker-Ramos, PT treats patients with lymphedema at Sullivan Physical Therapy. She is both a Certified Lymphatic Therapist and a LANA (Lymphology Association of North America) certified therapist. Angela is also a member of the National Lymphedema Network.

Complete Decongestive Therapy
Complete Decongestive Therapy which includes manual lymph drainage, compression therapy, decongestive exercises and skin and nail care.
Manual Lymph Drainage which is a special treatment technique that utilizes lymphatic pathways to empty and decompress fluid-filled areas, allowing the limb to return to normal or near normal size.
Compressive Garments and Bandaging are multiple layers of low stretch bandages that are applied to the limb in order to achieve a graded compression to prevent the area from refilling with evacuated fluid.
Decongestive Exercises which are exercises that activate muscle and joints, which results in increased lymph flow and decreased swelling of the limb.
Patient Education in Self Management including education on your diagnosis, daily activities, posture, lifting techniques and work biomechanics. Instruction in self manual lymph massage in order to continue progress at home.
Home Exercise Program instruction includes therapeutic exercise, functional exercise, stabilization exercise, stretching and pilates.
